How Social Media Reacted to Western Bulldogs’ Preliminary Final Win Over Giants & Top 5 Weekend Highlights

Then there were two.

The AFL and NRL are down to the final two with this weekend’s Grand Final combatants earning their places in the season decider after Preliminary Finals victories over the weekend.

In the NRL, the Storm face the Sharks with the Shire club aiming to capture their first premiership in their 50th year while in the AFL, perennial Grand Finalists Sydney Swans take on the Western Bulldogs who are appearing in their first grand final since winning the flag in 1954.

Overseas, the heavyweights flexed their muscles in week 6 of the English Premier League including Mourinho's Red Devils who returned to form with a bang, hammering reigning champs Leicester City 4-1 at Old Trafford.

Here’s our countdown to the top 5 highlights over the weekend.

5 - Racing - Black Heart Bart runs over field in Underwood Stakes

Black Heart Bart is on track for an epic showdown with champion mare Winx after cruising home in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

Some questioned Bart’s ability to handle the extra distance at 1800m but he well and truly put those doubts to rest with a dominant run.

Darren Weir’s charge is now on course to challenge Winx in the Cox Plate and what a tussle that will be if that eventuates.

4 - UFC - Cyborg lights up Octagon in Brazil

It’s indisputable that Brazilian superstar Cris Cyborg is the most feared woman in the world of MMA.

The 31-year-old reinforced that reputation with another brutal display in Sunday’s UFC Fight Night 95 in Brazil.

Fighting in another catchweight bout, Cyborg disposed of Sweden’s Lina Lansberg by TKO inside two rounds.

The reigning Invicta FC featherweight champion certainly has claims to being the greatest female fighter in the history of MMA.

3 - Football - Red Devils thump reigning champs 4-1

After back-to-back league defeats along with a third loss in the Europa League, the star-studded Red Devils were under enormous pressure to arrest their slump against last year’s champs Leicester City on Saturday.

In front of the Old Trafford faithful, Mourinho’s charges fired home an unanswered four goals against the Foxes in the opening half before running out 4-1 victors.

High profile signing Paul Pogba netted his first goal in Red Devils colours much to the relief of teammates and fans alike.

2 - NRL - Sharks on track to break premiership drought

In their 50th year, the Cronulla Sharks are poised to capture their maiden premiership.

The Shire club have never tasted premiership glory but with one more win against the Storm, they’ll break their grand final hoodoo.

The Sharks booked their place in this Sunday’s decider with a 32-20 victory over the defending premiers North Queensland Cowboys.

Blues half James Maloney had a night out for the Sharks crossing for two tries and adding six goals for a personal haul of 20 points.

1 - AFL - Bulldogs claim a giant victory to seal place in AFL Grand Final

The rampant Western Bulldogs are on a roll and the doggies are now just one win away from capturing their first flag since 1954.

After qualifying for the finals in 7th spot, the young Bulldogs have won two interstate finals on the road including Saturday’s Prelim final thriller over the GWS Giants in Sydney.

The Doggies face Sydney in the AFL Grand Final after the Swannies trounced the Cats by 37 points on the back of a blistering 7.2 (44) to 0.5 (5) opening quarter.
