NBL Round 2 Preview: Taipans Put Unbeaten Record On Line Against 36ers

Cairns v Adelaide | Thursday, October 12, 7.30pm (AEDT), Cairns Convention Centre

The unbeaten Snakes welcome the high octane 36ers to the Snakepit in a battle between two of the league's form teams.

Cairns are sitting pretty at 2-0 after the opening round, but will be without big man Nate Jawai, who suffered a foot injury in the Taipans’ season opener against the Hawks.

The 36ers have been prolific through their opening two games, registering 97 in a two-point loss to Melbourne United and 105 in a nine-point win over the Kings.

Prolific guards Nathan Sobey (pictured below) (27 points v Melbourne United) and Ramon Moore (22 points v Kings) have led the scoring for the 36ers.

The Verdict

The Taipans’ stingy defence faces its sternest test yet against the high-scoring 36ers and in the battle between offence and defence, the Taipans and their stingy 'D' should get them home in a tight one.

New Zealand v Sydney | Friday, October 13, 5.30pm (AEDT), Spark Arena

Experienced guards Kirk Penney and Kevin Lisch (pictured above) know they need to lift their production to drive their respective sides to a maiden victory.

Penney logged 26 mins against the Taipans but returned just seven points while Lisch went just three of 11 at 27 percent against the 36ers.

The bigger problem for the Breakers is their shooting efficiency and they’ll need to improve on their 26 of 66 at 39 percent to be any chance of overcoming the Kings.

The Verdict

The Kings should be over their jetlag and will be keen to open their account against their Kiwi counterparts.

Don't be surprised if the Kings send the Breakers to the line given the Breakers landed just 10 of 21 at 47 percent from the stripe.

Perth v Illawarra | Friday, October 13, 9.30pm (AEDT), Perth Arena

Much anticipated Grand Final rematch where the Hawks are hoping to reverse last season’s result when they got swept by the Wildcats.

The Hawks will need to neutralise Bryce Cotton (pictured above) to be any chance of knocking off the reigning premiers.

The Wildcats guard logged 24 points in the Wildcats’ win over the Bullets, and is looking every bit of the Grand Final MVP which set last season’s final series alight.

The Verdict

Hawks big man AJ Ogilvy will again be a key in the paint and if the Wildcats can shut him down, they’ll notch another win in the jungle.

Adelaide v Melbourne United | Saturday, October 14, 5.30pm (AEDT), Titanium Security Arena

The whole NBL community has stood up and applauded Melbourne United after a stellar performance against NBA giants Oklahoma City in Monday’s NBA v NBL match in Oklahoma.

Up against Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony and Paul George, United pushed the star-studded Thunder all the way going down by the barest of margins 86-85.

Casper Ware (pictured above) was enormous for the visitors with 20 points, nine of which came in the final quarter when United made a dramatic push for the upset.

Thunder coach Billy Donovan was full of praise for United, applauding their competitiveness, physicality and aggressiveness.

The Verdict

If last week was any guide where the Kings faded late after their NBA match in Utah, Melbourne United will likely be jetlagged after their NBA excursion to Oklahoma.

Sobey and the 36ers to get a close win at home.

Sydney v Illawarra | Sunday, October 15, 3pm (AEDT), Qudos Bank Arena

The Kings return home for a matchup against the Hawks and they’ll be desperate to open their home court account in front of the Kings faithful.

A high priority for the Kings will be being more dominant in the paint where they were out enthused by the 36ers in their home opener last week.

The Verdict

Fancy the Kings to work things out in the paint and notch their opening home win for the season.
