Alex Chambers’ UFC 215 Flyweight Title Preview: Demetrious Johnson v Ray Borg

Demetrious Johnson v Ray Borg | Sunday, September 10, 2.30pm (AEST), Rogers Place, Edmonton, Canada

After the hype of the McGregor vs Mayweather boxing super fight, the main event of UFC 215 in Edmonton, Canada gives us an easy act to follow.

Enter current flyweight champion Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson making history by attempting an 11th successful defence of his 125 pound crown.

A never before seen feat in the mixed martial arts history books.

Mighty Mouse will be squaring off in the Octagon against top flyweight contender Ray ‘The Taxmexican’ Borg (pictured below), who has won five of his last six fights proving he’s a worthy challenger.

What makes this fight even more interesting is that Mighty Mouse was thought to clash heads with perhaps another champ for his record breaking defence but this fight against Borg was one that Johnson personally called for himself.

And, so the match making gods responded in his favour but will the outcome also see it the same way?

WIth a chance to surpass the current record held by one of mixed martial arts and UFC's GOAT (greatest of all time), Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva, I feel that Edmonton, Canada is sure in for a treat.

Mighty Mouse is an entertainer but he’s also a finisher.

Four of his last six fights ended prematurely for his opponents, with three of them being vicious submissions.

What this record breaking 11th underscores is his reign as not only 125 champ but warrants him as the true pound for pound king.

Mixed Martial Arts isn't a long-lived sport and for an athlete like Mighty Mouse to display such strong consistency is an act in itself.

So, everyone that will have eyes on Edmonton will be wondering how will Mighty Mouse outdo his opponent this time?

What makes Mighty Mouse an unparalleled fighter is that he's a pure finisher.

Whether the fight ends quickly or goes the distance he has the ability to always find a way to entertain the crowd which makes him a natural for the spotlight and for the crown.

So, what kind of bait will Borg leave for Mighty Mouse if one even exists?

Many credit Borg’s success in his unique grappling rapport and ground game.

With only two blemishes in his 13 pro fights, it’s notable that Borg has ended six of them via submission.

This will be Borg's first title fight and first five-round fight.

Although he has seen the completion of three rounds successfully on countless occasions will he be prepared for 25 minutes with one of the world’s greatest?

The Verdict

Edmonton, Canada will be a part of history and although I think Borg is one of the UFC's more exciting flyweights, Mighty Mouse is just a force from another planet.

He will want to finish this as quickly as he asked for it.
