David Zdrilic’s A-League Grand Final Preview: Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory

Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory | Sunday, May 7, 5pm (AEDT), Allianz Stadium

Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory is a fitting Grand Final, pitting first against second and both are deserving of their place in the A-League showpiece.

Everything points to Sydney securing the double and their third Grand Final victory after a record-breaking season was followed up with a convincing 3-0 win over Perth in the semi-finals.

The Sky Blues also cleaned up at the A-League awards with Milos Ninkovic, Danny Vukovic and Graham Arnold winning best player, goalkeeper and coach respectively.

Sydney boast an impressive balance both in attack and defence having conceded the fewest goals while still managing to score freely.

Equally impressive has been their determination and confidence which is now ingrained in the side.

Victory’s talisman Besart Berisha (pictured above) headed home the deciding goal against the Roar to book their place in the final.

It was a much-improved performance from Kevin Muscat’s men who now head to Sydney full of confidence.

The week off meant Victory were much fresher than their opponents and it showed.

They kept the intensity up for the whole game and Brisbane were just unable to cope.

For the final, expect both sides to continue playing the same football that got them there.

Sydney will press aggressively on negative passes and in build-ups, look for forward runs in behind and use of the width provided by their fullbacks.

Victory will try to get Rojas, Troisi and Ben Khalfallah in good areas to hurt Sydney and provide service to their main striker Berisha.

KEY BATTLE: Milos Ninkovic v Besart Berisha

Ninkovic (pictured above) was declared the A-League's best and he will again be the key man for the Sky Blues.

He has the ability to score and create while his positioning, intelligence and game awareness are second to none.

Berisha is the man for the big occasion and after scoring the winner in the semi-finals, he’ll be looking to do the same here.

The Verdict

Sydney have beaten Victory three times this season and with added advantage of being at home, they’ll cap off a superb season with their third Grand Final win.
