Tom Lee's Ebor Festival Tips: Day 4 - Shrewd Looks A Wise Choice For The Ebor Handicap

A total of 7mm of rain so far here in York means the ground has eased to Good for today's £280,000 Ebor Handicap (4.00pm), a fiercely contested, 20-runner, mile and three quarter shootout which has been in existence since 1843.

Jo Tuite's Litigant was a 33/1 trends buster 12 months ago, arriving off the back of a lengthy lay-off from a single figure draw, but usually drawn in double figures is where you want to be, and that's the case for Iain Jardine's recent course and distance winner, Shrewd

Housed in stall 10, the six-year-old son of Street Sense might be a real player a tempting odds, in a race where only one favourite has delivered since 1998.

Perhaps the most persuasive statistic of all concerns weight - in the last 70 years only two winners have carried more than 9st 4lbs - no problem for Shrewd, who has 9st 3lbs but only carries 8st 10lbs due to Clifford Lee's apprentice claim.

He's shooting up the ratings but goes oh so well here and is clearly worth a shot at a major prize like this - with so much in his favour he gets the nod each way.

The searching gallop will suit him on a track which won't necessarily play to the strengths of some of his key rivals, plus it should be recalled that even in a race that didn't pan out for him last time out, he still finished ahead of Sir Chauvelin and Seamour.

Elsewhere on a busy card, William Haggas can enhance his dazzling Gimcrack record by scoring with Mubtasim (3.25pm).

Unbeaten after slick wins at Yarmouth and Haydock Park, the second of which came at the expense of subsequent winners, Mubtasim can give his stable a fourth win in this race since 2006, the most recent of which came a year ago when Ajaya struck at 7/2.

Last but not least, a fitting way to end Yorskhire's biggest racing day of the year would be with a Yorkshire-trained winner, and that's what Kevin Ryan can supply with Laughton in the apprentice sprint (5.05pm).

In Kevin Stott he's got one of the best drivers in the line-up, and didn't seem hard done by when nudged up four pounds for winning at Glorious Goodwood last time out.

Any further rain that comes won't damage his chances, and another win could very well be on the cards.

Good luck!
