History was created in Super Bowl LI as the Tom Brady-led Patriots recovered from a 28-3 deficit to stun the Matt Ryan-led Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in the first overtime in Super Bowl history.
In what will surely be remembered as the greatest Super Bowl of all time, the Patriots scored an unanswered 31 points as the Patriots lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the fifth time.
Brady was superb throwing 43 of 62 for 466 yards and two TD while James White had 14 receptions for 110 yards and one TD.
The opening quarter was typically physical as both defences dominated nullifiying each other’s offence but the big hits weren’t restricted to the players as one unfortunate ball boy found out.
Falcons running back Devonta Freeman opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 5-yard rushing TD, capping off a 71-yard drive.
The NFC Champions extended their lead to 14-0 after a 19-yard dart from Ryan to Austin Hooper.
Just when the Pats looked like opening their account, a rare Tom Brady INT gifted the Falcons a pick-6 as a pass intended for Danny Amendola fell into the hands of Falcons cornerback Robert Alford who ran 82 yards for the TD.
The Pats finally opened their account in the dying seconds of the first half with a field goal as the Falcons went into the half-time break up 21-3.

Not content with a three-possession lead, the Falcons extended their lead to 28-3 with a 6-yard touchdown pass from Ryan to running back Tevin Coleman.
With just over two minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Patriots finally reached the endzone as former Badgers star James White lunged over for a 5-yard TD pass from Brady, capping off a 72-yard drive.
Gostkowski though missed the extra point, his fifth miss of the season, as the Falcons led 28-9.
A Patriots field goal reduced the deficit to 28-12 before Amendola and Brady combined for a much needed TD with just under six minutes remaining.
White rushed in the two-point conversion to reduce the Falcons' lead to just one score.
Star Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones later provided one of the highlight moments of the Super Bowl with a spectacular grab alongside the sideline.
Down 28-20 and needing a two-point conversion to take the Super Bowl into overtime for the first time, Brady delivered, marching the Pats down into the redzone as White rushed it in for a 1-yard TD.
Amendola and Brady combined for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 28-28 and send SB51 into OT.
Brady was flawless in overtime with a succession of pinpoint passes before running back White punched it into the endzone for the decisive match-winning TD!
